Nonomancer v1.2

Well, it’s finally here! After taking a lot more time than I thought it would, the new version has arrived. There are many, many changes in this version, so let’s get to it.

Install information

No need to uninstall anything this time. Everything should work fine. Microsoft will still think of it as an dangerous program because I didn’t register it. Just run the .msi file and it should install over top of the old version without any problems.

You can find the download here: [nonomancer_v1_2.msi]

Nonomancer v1.2

New Features

All of the interface screens (title, map, etc) have new art and layout. They have a more consistent feel through the game now.

The game now has an optional tutorial. It contains a few puzzles that will explain how nonograms will work. The tutorial is accessed off the main menu.

Once you start capturing beasts, they will have a variety of skills. Before a puzzle begins, you will be asked to select a skill and it will activate once the puzzle starts. Some skills reveal squares, some fix wrong placements, some give you information about what lines have solvable squares and other abilities. Have fun!

There is new music. Most of it has been redone. There are environmental sounds (wind, rain, etc) that mix in as well, giving it a moody feel. There is also a victory jingle.

The fonts have changed to make both the clues and text more readable.

There is an Options button off the main menu. This will allow you to set the volume for the music and sound effects.

There are over twice as many puzzles as before.

Moo.

Bug fixes

Fixed all the puzzles and played them. All the puzzles are solvable now and created using the Nonogram tool I made.

There were a few bugs with the clues graying out incorrectly. They have all been fixed.

Many minor bugs were fixed, but most of them were from the new features and I can’t remember them all.

Notes

I will be putting the Nonomancer aside for a bit while I focus on my new product. I will periodically come back to it, but there won’t be an update (unless we have some bad bugs) for a little while. Enjoy!

Special thanks to TheJungleQueen and KittyAttackShip for their help, feedback and testing with this version.

  1. Nice game, had a lot of fun playing it! I had some trouble with the video resolution on dual monitors. The game itself was fine, but the flavor text when a puzzle is completed goes off the screen to the right. If there's a debug log or anything, let me know and I'll send it to you. @stevethesmith

  3. Giving this a try! Thanks for sharing Diablo's design doc. I know it might seem kinda silly but I love reading stuff like that.

  5. Would you mind sharing the title and composer of the puzzle music (not the menu music)?

    1. Thanks a ton for the info. I always like to give proper credit to composers/musicians and I couldn't find any information regarding the music in this game.

  6. Thank you for this game. I started playing it recently and just finished it a few days ago. Every other Picross game will look bland now. It'd be great if could continue work on this title; I'd definitely buy it. (I already bought It Lurks Below, but honestly, I'm looking for short games at this time and being able to play a few boards and then stop is great for me.)

    1. Try installing WINE or it's successor & see if it'll run then.

  8. Honestly it's a wonderful game. Simple is best. It's great for resetting yourself before you dive back into work. The only issue I had (one time so far) the game did freeze when I left the game for to long to check another window. (windows 10) I'd assume it was a side effect of the fact it doesn't seem to run in the background. (which isn't a bad thing) The audio turns off when you leave the screen and when I came back from checking chrome I had to reset. Thankfully it autosaves so it's far from a major bug.

  9. I really love what you did with the game with the monsters you capture in your book and the abilities you get to choose with that, really cool RPG flavour added there to the original puzzle.
If I'd change 1 thing for a potential 2.0 on the table it's the addition of some analytical tools to reduce the strain on my eyes. I get really bad migraines if I strain my eyes for too long to keep track of all the checked and unchecked boxes and I've found that nonograms katana for reference I can play much much longer before that becomes an issue. I can solve more 60x60's there than I can solve 10x10's in any other nonogram I've played because I can just sketch and draw out a bit of a plan count lengths using the ingame counter and just overall worry less about looking closely rather than analyzing my next move.
Conceptually though, probably the best variation of nonograms I've played so you're definitely onto something here.

  12. Any chance you'll add levels or something? This game is so cool but once you've done every level a few times... For example random "pixellized" images or something after the regular levels.

Thanks a bunch for the game!
